In the interest of keeping things kind of palpable (and interesting), let’s look at a few more numbers. (The following section might be slightly inaccurate. In order to find what I was looking for, I simply typed the term in the search bar on GOAT - I didn’t account for the differences between mens, womens, kids models, etc.)
Oh... you didn't mention when one release of a shoe includes 50 different colorways all at once. Not just Virgil's 50 Dunks. Pharrell's Supercolor Superstars way back when... Excessive, and dare I say... lazy? Curation is hard work. Identifying/eliminating bad choices is hard work.
From the Lebron line onward, I've kind of ignored all the colorway hooplah. I'll look at the new models for the design, decide I will stick to the classics that I love, and pretty much ignore all the rest. Gotta maintain my sanity. I think the last Lebron I enjoyed the look of was the Lebron 8 because of the beautiful AIR bubble, kinda like the Air Max 97, and because I thought showing off the Flywire was a nice design point.
I think the explanation is simple: Nike's success depends on buzz. Which creates more buzz: 1 million pairs of 1 colorway, or 1000 pairs only of each of 1000 colorways?
I'm a HUGE Iverson fan, I have 8 pairs of shoes, 7 in Question, (Ba dum tss). I also have a two pairs of Paul George and three pairs of Kyrie shoes, but because they're not "popular", no one cares. I have four pairs of LeBron's, but no one cares about his either.
A lot of people are scared to like what they like, the sneaker community divides each other and that's the problem.
