“One good thing about music - when it hits, you feel no pain” - Bob Marley
So...MF Doom. I’m not gonna front and try and tell y’all I was some big fan of him or anything. There was a moment, though, where MF Doom definitely hit me.
A lot of y’all remember - I lived in New York for the majority of my 20’s. Every morning, I’d wake up, put on my corporate monkey suit, grab my bag and head to the train so I could get to work by the time the markets opened. As soon as I got on the train, I’d find a seat (preferably by the door), pull out a book, and hit ‘shuffle’ on my iPod.
Having grown up in California - NY hip hop largely eluded me. I was into the Clan & Jay and the other well known artists and albums...but for the underground and less polished stuff - I didn’t get it. The mood, the repetition, the cadence - none of it was exciting to me. But when I moved there I met a few guys who dragged me from borough to borough and I slowly started to come around. I decided that in order to get the *full* NY experience, I had to immerse myself into the music.
Over the years, I listened on everything that even mentioned New York - from Afrika Bambata to Diamond D to Kool G Rap to Mobb Deep to Nas and everything in between - I eventually came around to Doom. My dude @danposite (RIP) sent me ‘Viktor Vaughn the Vaudville Villian’ and I remember listening to it as I was waiting for the train and a song started up with a sound only true NYers would recognize - a train pulling into the station - and because my head was pretty deep in a book, it actually tricked me into believing a train had actually pulled into the station. I must’ve played that album a hundred times before I moved on to ‘MM Food’ and ‘Doomsday.’ RIP MF Doom.
Anyway...the shoes….
Of absolutely no surprise to anyone paying attention - anything MF Doom related has skyrocketed after the news of his death broke. TBH I was never much a fan of the SB - I’m not a fan of Hi’s and the colors a bit too plain for me - but I was actually more into the MF Doom x Clarks Wallabee collab. I almost pulled the trigger on them a few times (around $100), but at these prices I’m not really interested…
