just learned that one of my students got into a very prestigious school on the West Coast off the strength of my recommendation letter and it made me really proud...although...a bit anxious for her.
I graduated from Truckee High School in 1998...more than 20 years ago. The internet was just getting started, @kobebryant had just been drafted, and although sneakers were on the mind, so was my next meal. I really didn’t know anything about college and ended up applying because my parents basically made me. I applied to only 3 - #ucdavis#ucsc and #SFSU - Out of those 3, I decided on UC Santa Cruz and being that I was the first person from my family to go to college - I really had no idea of what to expect.
This pic is of me and my girlfriend at the time in my dorm room on move-in day. I was filling in some forms while she was trying to hold back tears. Looking at the pic, I have on my #bootleg#canalstreet@movado , my #silvertabs , and a surf shirt/hat. I bet there’s only a handful of y’all out there who will be able to pinpoint the shoes on my feet (@melniki)...they’re Nike Air Alates. My mom took the pic and it takes me back to how goddamn nervous I was sitting there trying to pretend I knew what was going on.
Overall, I feel like I had an incredibly transformative college experience - it was scary and exciting and confusing and strange and awesome and illuminating and heartbreaking. I know y’all are pretty terrified right now and lemme say - I fully empathize with you. I’ve been a high school teacher for the past few years and am fully aware of the world we are living in. If anyone wants someone to just talk to about graduation and what might come next - DM me.
