It’s funny - I’d say a good 60% of my favorite sneaker accounts are now posting about cards...not MY cards, but cards in general.
What is it about these little pieces of cardboard that have taken on a new life and why are sneakerheads suddenly so interested? I know @stockx is like the purveyor of all things hype...are they to blame for the sudden resurgence in cards?
If you took it upon yourself to talk with any of these sneaker accounts that have been posting about cards (and I’ve talked with several of them), almost all have told me that cards were their first love. Cards were MY first love as well...I started collecting at the behest of my cousin(s), when I was 7 years old and we found these 1987 Topps cards at our local drug store. We were only focused on collecting the SF Giants players. My love for cards was short-lived, though...I collected for a couple of years, sold my WHOLE collection to some rich kid down the street, then tried building it up again for a couple of years after that...I’d say I gave up entirely probably around 1998, when I worked after school at a card shop for $18/day. I didn’t have the time nor the interest in keeping up with the market, so I basically traded every single card I owned for Michael Jordan cards...which I still have (and are mostly worthless, to this day).
Project 2020 got me back into the *idea* of cards - the idea that you could own a piece of something that you’re tangentially interested in - but watching what everyone is doing with these $50 packs and $500 boxes and $10,000 cards...I’m reminded that I don’t have the propensity for that kind of risk.
I mean...the FUN of ripping packs is what I miss. The thrill of the hunt. The beauty of surprise. I definitely don’t miss blowing three weeks allowance on cardboard, though...lol
