The Beastie Boys video ‘So What Cha Want’ came out in like 1992 or so... I was really a skateboarder from like the age of 5 until the age of 13, and after that point I really started playing A LOT of basketball. The Beastie Boys and this video, IMO, was another one of those crossovers between hip-hop and skateboarding...at least in my life.
This video changed my whole style aesthetic - the beanies and the Adidas Superstars were it. That was the first time I saw skaters wearing shelltoes and it made sense - rubber on the toes. My dad had a pair of Black and Gold Adidas in his closet - I coulda sworn they were superstars, but I don’t think they are - and I made a huge deal about him giving me his pair when I grew up. He agreed to buy me a pair, but the store had no pairs left so he tried to buy me some $10 whateverthefucks. I wasn’t havin’ it. I always wanted them, never got around to owning a pair. To this day - I have *never* worn a pair of Adidas superstars. But they shaped my perception.
Are there any music videos that shaped your whole style aesthetic?
