(2/6) The secret to reselling.
If you weren’t aware, ‘reselling’ at it’s very basic level is selling something for more than you bought it for. So by that token, I started reselling stuff at a very young age. My mom would take me to work with her at the restaurant, and when I was really bored I’d ask the guys in the kitchen if they wanted me to get them anything from the 7-11 down the street - they’d give me money and I’d *always* take a delivery fee. I knew a burrito was $1.79, but I’d charge $3. Now, this wasn’t technically reselling, but I noticed that - even at 10 years old - I was able to put a mark-up on certain items for convenience's sake. So I’d collect $20 or so from the group and I’d come back with probably $11 worth of junk food (frozen burritos, drinks, candy). Which was great for me at the time. I made a lot of cash just pulling 20-minute food runs. And everyone was happy.
In 1994, I moved from California to Cardiff, Wales, and I had no idea at the time, but the stuff I was into at the time (rap music, Michael Jordan, and sports cards) were in HIGH demand (and SUPER low supply) in the UK. Dudes paid me ALL kinds of money for stuff that I took advantage of in the US. I brought a tape collection and a box of cards with me - Snoop, Dre, Cube, and a few others…and a bunch of baseball cards - and ended up returning with Walkmans and Soccer Jerseys and comic books and EU import CDs and all kinds of dope European shit that NOBODY in the US had.
This is me right after I moved to Cardiff. Both the shirt and the hat were left in Cardiff…
And this is the movie theater I spent wayyyy too much money at. I think I saw ‘Above the Rim’ four or five times.
And the second floor of this white building is where I lived.
But ‘reselling’ in the biblical sense (lol) for me, really started around 2001, when I discovered Yahoo Auctions and eBay and realized that I could make a bit of extra cash on my regular thrift store runs or even just sell the stuff I had collected as a kid - CDs, baseball cards, comic books, etc. I realized pretty early on that I could sell things for more than I bought them for and give myself a bit of a cushion to collect.
Stay tuned…the secret is on its way!
